Christchurch's Belfast Tavern is offering a $100 bar tab reward for the return of a 15-year-old plastic toilet seat.
The seat, which would cost about $47 to replace, disappeared from the tavern about 10 days ago.
Publican Trev Inwood was surprised at the theft as the old seat was "bog-standard".
Replacing the seat would have been the "easy option", but that was not the point, he told The Press.
Several people had brought in "imposter seats" to claim the reward but the tactic was unlikely to work.
"We've got pretty clear evidence. I've used it myself over many years and we've got other locals on a board of control judging it," Mr Inwood said.
