The marine and beach threat for Northland been lifted but Civil Defence is urging people to be cautious as there may be "unusual currents".

Northlanders had been warned to stay off beaches, stay out of the water and not to go out sight seeing as it was classed as under a 'Marine and Beach Threat'.

Northland Civil Defence Emergency Management group spokesperson Graeme MacDonald said that threat had been lifted however he was still urging caution around the ocean saying there may be "unusual currents".

"There's been a huge earthquake and despite scientific information we don't know what may or may not happen. People should be cautious in the next 12 to 24 hours," he said.

Dive charters and surf schools were operating following the advice of Civil Defence.
