A scene examination by specialist investigators is expected to begin shortly. Post mortems of the deceased will be carried out in Auckland tomorrow.
9am:
The scene of a homicide inquiry at Dundas Rd, Whangarei is blocked off about 500 metres up with three vehicles in the middle of the road - a red ute, white BMW and blue car.
It's not clear what connection they have to the inquiry but residents further up the road from the homicide scene could not drive past the vehicles as police had set up a cordon around them as they are part of the inquiry.
One resident told the Northern Advocate she had to leave her car at home and had to walk to work.
She did not know the people in the house where the homicide inquiry was based and did not hear any disturbance there this morning.
Another resident said it was frightening to hear that there were two bodies in the neighbourhood and that a homicide investigation was underway.
It's believed a man lived in the house by himself.
8.30am:
Two bodies have been found in a house in Whangarei this morning.
A homicide investigation has been launched after the bodies were discovered when police were called to a house in the suburb of Riverside in the early hours.
No-one else is being sought in connection to the deaths, police said, but officers were speaking to a number of witnesses.
A scene examination would be conducted today with the assistance of specialists.
