A call for help to identify two women who robbed a Kaitaia bakery at knifepoint has sparked the biggest response since Northland police started using Facebook as a crime-fighting tool.
The women used the business' own knives to rob the Coast 2 Coast Bakery on June 29 but were captured on CCTV.
Northland police posted the images on their Facebook page, which were widely shared on social media. Within hours an 18-year-old Peria woman was arrested and charged with aggravated robbery, while a 21-year-old woman was charged with receiving stolen property.
Detective Sergeant Trevor Beatson, of the Kaitaia CIB, said police had been swamped with suggested names for the suspects.
"Our administrators tell us that this is the greatest information flow and biggest response to the Northland police Facebook page since it was started. Crimestoppers was also flooded with information as a result of the media and social media exposure given to this case," Mr Beatson said.
