The Metservice has issued a severe weather watch for Northland just in time for the weekend.
A low over the north Tasman Sea is expected to approach the North Island Saturday evening, then move over central areas Saturday night and Sunday morning.
Rain and strengthening northerlies are expected to spread over northern parts of the North Island during Saturday, with some heavy falls during Saturday night and early Sunday morning.
This watch is for the possibility that rain accumulations may approach warning amounts about northern and eastern parts of Northland and Bay of Plenty from Saturday afternoon through to Sunday morning, and about northern Taranaki, Waikato, Waitomo and northern parts of Taupo from Saturday evening through to Sunday morning.
At this stage the broad scale accumulations are a little uncertain, however, these areas may experience localised heavy falls and squally conditions in possible thunderstorms during Saturday evening and early Sunday.
Metservice forecasters will continue to monitor the situation.
