It was a picture-perfect New Year's day at Glinks Gully with bright sunshine, a gentle breeze, sparkling sea, white sand and hordes of happy family groups.

The annual games have been held at the west coast holiday resort, 26km from Dargaville, on New Year's Day for decades.

Generations of holidaymakers have taken part and, while it's the holiday community at the Ripiro Beach settlement that organises and sponsors the event each year, the games are open to the public and they come in their droves to enjoy the numerous competitions.

Young and old took the mark for the sprints, steeplechases, novelty sack races and kicking the ball competition.

The popular tug-of-war competitions saw the married men out-pull their single counterparts while the single girls defeated the married women in a tough battle.

The Mr Muscles competition always draws plenty of laughs as competitors grimace and flex or even giggle for the audience.

Winner of the Miss Glinks Gully competition was 26-year-old Aimee Preston, while Shontelle Clement, 10, was the winner of the "junior" Miss Glinks Gully.

Winners are selected from the crowd by an independent judging panel.
