Whangarei District Council will consider submissions on a plan for a multi-million dollar four-star hotel at the Town Basin next week.
The council is looking at leasing or selling a 4249sq m chunk of land at 8 and 10 Dent St for a hotel. A council-commissioned report from consultants Deloitte said a 120-room four-star hotel and conference centre would cost up to $28 million and create almost 100 permanent jobs worth about $3.8 million annually.
The council received 200 submissions on the plan and will meet on Wednesday to consider the submissions. Nine submitters have indicated they wish to be heard in support of their submissions.
If the plan is pursued, the council is likely to call for expressions of interest from hotel developers.
In its report, Deloitte said a 120-room hotel with conference room would cost an estimated $28 million to build, with the potential for 60 per cent, or $16.8 million, to be sub-contracted to Northland firms.
