Whangarei mothers will be participating in a nationwide effort to break the record for the most women to simultaneously breastfeed their babies.
The Big Latch On, run by Women's Health Action, will be held at the Whangarei Parents Centre on Friday to coincide with the annual World Breastfeeding Week.
More than 120 venues throughout New Zealand will be open to mothers eager to join in.
Maternal and child health promoter for Women's Health Action, Isis McKay, says the Big Latch On is about encouraging women to breastfeed.
"According to the Growing up New Zealand report, around 96 per cent of post-pregnant women report that one of the biggest barriers to breastfeeding is the lack of community and peer support," Ms McKay said.
