Ngapuhi elder Kingi Taurua is seeking restorative justice on a marae to settle an assault charge brought against him by his niece.
Taurua, a 63-year-old radio presenter based in Auckland, appeared before Judge Cecilie Rushton in the Kaikohe District Court yesterday for a status hearing on a charge of assaulting a woman at Waitangi Marae in January.
The court remanded the matter until May 9 for consideration of Taurua's request to seek restorative justice. After the hearing Taurua said he wanted to have the case taken to a marae as soon as possible.
