Newmarket retailer Kevyn Male is "saddened and disgusted" by Westfield's plans for a $300 million Newmarket mall.
Mr Male, whose Three Bears store was a Newmarket icon in the 1980s, says the public have no way to object to the development, and shops for the mall will be stolen from the existing Newmarket strip.
Having swallowed St Lukes Group and announced plans for the Newmarket mall, Westfield New Zealand has also negotiated short-term leases for 85 per cent of its Mercury Energy buildings, where the mall will be built, starting in 2002.
