WHANGAREI - Strains of Marilyn Manson, Bryan Ferry and rap-like music filled the High Court at Whangarei as jurors listened to a long recording of a rural shooting.
The jury yesterday finished hearing the tape made by murder accused Kerry Anthony Johansen. The recording lasted nearly an hour.
The 17-year-old has denied murdering farm worker Steven Douglas Mitchell at Hukerenui, 30km north of Whangarei, on May 10.
The Crown has said the tape, which had been stopped and started by Johansen over more than six hours, shows what was in his mind at the time of the killing.
Johansen talks into his stepfather's dictaphone while walking to the crime scene.
He keeps track of the time from just before midday, and describes the distance he has to go to Mr Mitchell's sleepout.
"I'm ... pissed off ... but going to do it now... hot ... pissed didn't do Jim over because he's got heaps of money."
He plans to wait inside Mr Mitchell's house until the 34-year-old returns from milking.
"I'm still going to record everything I do ... have come this far, not going to turn around ... no way." Johansen says he is in Mr Mitchell's house by 4.39 pm.
"I have found a gun and I'm here if he comes in ... need more bullets I reckon."
Johansen tells the dictaphone he has to be "real quiet" because of the neighbours and he's going to "hold him up."
He remarks on the "heaps of boxes of beer" and by 4.41 pm says he has a double-barrel shotgun.
"I've got some gloves on, don't worry."
He says he has tested the gun. "It works ... man did it make a hole in the tree."
Johansen returns to Mr Mitchell's house. "I'm going to get him to get out of the car and if he cooperates I won't shoot him. If he does not cooperate, I will tell him to get in the boot and I'll shoot him in the boot."
By 5.14 pm Johansen says he has found another gun and is wearing a gun belt.
Johansen said he was already drinking, but only a stubby.
"I'm just waiting till I kill him. Then I'll get pissed and die ... yeah ... later."
Bryan Ferry music plays on a background radio until "bang" is heard.
There are minutes of fumbling noises then: "You **** egg."
Johansen gets in a car and Marilyn Manson is played.
Sounds include the noise of clinking bottles and mostly rap music.
The earlier monologue, which had ended after the "bang," was replaced with just occasional expletives.
His last recorded words are: "I'll shoot someone again."
