What is it?

Ford's new Focus, sampled here in up-spec $41,990, 125kW/202Nm 2.0-litre Sport format with new body kit and reversing camera. Sync voice control for media and phone is now standard. Better aerodynamics improves fuel efficiency and up-spec cars get techno-safety goodies such as Active City stop, snaffled from Volvo to help cut fender benders.

We like

Sweet-handling Focus proves mainstream runabouts can be rewarding to drive; clever tech takes premium safety features to everyday drivers.

We loathe

The auto transmission that requires tapping a button on the gear lever's side to select cogs is too fiddly.
