Polo to race rally
Volkswagen will enter the world rally championship with a Polo R-based car, unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show with a 224kW/350Nm 1.6-litre motor.

Boxer for Subaru
Subaru says its BRZ will be the only mainstream front-engine rear-drive sports car to get a low-mounted boxer engine. The lightweight 2.0-litre unit was designed for the car and sits 120mm lower than in other Subarus.

Jimny upgraded
Suzuki's diminutive Jimny 4WD is back in production after a tsunami-caused break, upgraded with MP3-compatible audio, a clock and storage pocket. Entry-level price is $19,990.

Opus options
Ferrari fanatics unable to pay $270,000 for a diamond-encrusted edition of the Official Ferrari Opus or $3520 for the Classic Edition can get the same thing on line with iPhone, iTouch or iPod apps, or an E-book that retails at less than $16.

Frugal diesel
Volkswagen's latest Tiguan has arrived with a facelift and a more frugal 103kW/320Nm diesel engine for $53,250, including self-parking.

Hybrid economy
Two American drivers piloted a Kia Optima hybrid for 14 days through 48 States at an average 908km a day, and averaged 3.64l/100km.
