BBC's Faces of 2011 - women (+ list)

The BBC has compiled a list of 12 women considered its Faces of 2011.

Amongst them is a panda called Sweetie, named as "a light-hearted addition to the list".

The women diverge in their influence; from royals to politicians; singers to sport stars. All have made the cut for their presence in headlines worldwide.

January - US Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, who was shot in the head at a gathering in Tucson. In her first extended interview she struggled for words and recounted the ordeal as "difficult".

February - Adele, the singer who's voice could silence a room.

March - Libyan woman Eman al-Obeidi, who burst into a press conference accusing government soliders of rape. Video footage of the uproar can be found here.

April - Her 'Royal Hotness', Pippa Middleton, who stole the limelight from sister Kate after videos and photos of her perfect posterior went viral online and were splashed on the pages of newspapers and magazines worldwide.

May - Nafissatou Diallo, who accused Dominique Strauss-Kahn of sexual assault and attempted rape.

June - Tennis star Li Na, who was the first Chinese player to win a tennis Grand Slam singles title at the French Open.

July - Charlene Wittstock, who married Prince Albert of Monaco in a civil ceremony. A video of which can be found here.

August - US Republican Congresswoman Michele Bachmann.

September - Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff, who was the first woman to be elected president of Brazil and who also became the first woman to open a debate at the UN General Assembly.

October - The Duchess of Alba, 85, who's flamboyance could not be quelled as she married Alfonso Diez Carabantes, 24 years her junior. A video of her leaving the church with her new husband can be found here.

November - Corporal Kelsey de Santis, who brought along singer Justin Timberlake to the Marine Corps Ball in Richmond, Virginia.

December - Sweetie the panda, also known as 'Tian Tian' and fellow panda Sunshine (from the Ya'an reserve in Chengdu, China) were lent to Scotland's Edinburgh Zoo. A video found here shows them settling in to their new abode.
