Chase wasn't getting too carried away with his display in the biggest win recorded by the Magpies over Otago. The previous best was 38-3 set in 1982.
"I'm very happy for the team. I had a great team around me which made my job easier," he said.
The Magpies start was equally as electrified as Chase's pace. The Magpies led 19-0 after nine minutes with two tries to winger Ryan Tongia and one to captain and openside flanker Brendon O'Connor. Both of these players have scored three tries in two Ranfurly Shield encounters this season.
O'Connor's availability for the next shield defence against Bay of Plenty on Saturday is in doubt as he failed a concussion test after he appeared to be knocked out when attempting to tackle Otago blindside flanker TJ Ioane in the 44th minute. However O'Connor was still able to front for post-match media duties.
O'Connor praised Chase's performance and pointed out that while the game got messy towards the end he was proud of the manner in which his troops kept their opponents scoreless.
His Razorbacks counterpart, No 8 Charlie O'Connell, agreed it was a frustrating day for the visitors.
"We took the wind in the first half to try and get momentum but couldn't. When you're off the pace just slightly it will cost you."
Otago doesn't have the same depth they had last year when beaten 20-19 by the Magpies in their shield clash and 29-24 in their ITM Cup Championship semifinal. On yesterday's display only Ioane, hooker Liam Coltman and lock Tom Franklin from the pack and first five-eighth Hayden Parker from the backs would go close to securing a Magpies contract if they moved to the Bay.
When Otago centre Kieran Moffat spilt the ball forward in their best try scoring situation during the final minutes it summed up the visitors' trip to the Bay.
However the Magpies still deserve praise for their defensive effort and if they can reproduce this against the Steamers the Log 'o Wood will remain in the Bay.
While Chase and Tongia were classy they were pipped for player-of-the-match honours by blindside flanker Tony Lamborn who seems to get better with each match. He was brutal on defence and as usual got down and dirty in those dark places.
Prop Jason Long, who got the final six minutes off the bench, was another to debut for the Magpies. Like Chase he celebrated the occasion with a try.
"Props like pies," Philpott quipped referring to a nickname for tries.
Second five-eighth Horrell was again busy in all aspects of play as he got the perfect sendoff before travelling to Auckland this week for surgery on a hip injury. Fullback Richard Buckman celebrated his 50th first class game for the Magpies with a 34th minute try which saw him beat at least three defenders. His Highlanders teammate and Magpies No 8 Gareth Evans has every right to be proud of his display against his former union.
Magpies centre Robbie Fruean regularly busted the Razorbacks defensive line and first five-eighth Ihaia West relished the numerous attacking opportunities he had. West did well to land three of his five attempts at goal in the tricky wind.
Match stats
• HB Magpies 41 (Ryan Tongia 2, Richard Buckman, Brendon O'Connor, Shannan Chase, Jason Long tries; Ihaia West pen, 4 cons) Otago Razorbacks 0. HT: 31-0.
• Turning point: Magpies winger Shannan Chase's 26th-minute try which with first five-eighth Ihaia West's conversion put the hosts ahead 26-0. The Razorbacks were never going to recover from that.
• Heartstopper: Otago flanker TJ Ioane's 44th minute charge into Magpies captain and openside flanker Brendon O'Connor who appeared to have been knocked out. He failed a subsequent concussion test.
• Player of the match: Magpies blindside flanker Tony Lamborn. A huge defensive work rate and again got down and dirty in those dark places. But only just ahead of Chase and fellow winger Ryan Tongia.
