The Hawke's Bay Orienteering Club hosted the North Island Secondary Schools Orienteering Championships during the weekend.
The two day event featured the individual championships on day one and interschool relays on the second day, both events staged on farmland on Maraetotara Rd.
The individual championship races produced some close finishes with flattish courses and ideal conditions resulting in some fast times.
In the senior boys championship, Nick Hann from Onslow College, Wellington, was favoured to win and did by a comfortable margin. Callum Herries from Napier Boys had an excellent run to place third, five minutes back. In the senior girls race, Holly Edmonds from Napier Girls was second, three minutes behind Lauren Turner of Samuel Marsden Collegiate.
Other Hawke's Bay runners with placings in the individual championship grades were D. Beckman (NBHS) 1st in Int. Boys, J. Lobb ( HNHS) 3rd Int. Boys, V. Fox (NGHS) 2nd Int. Girls, B. Stephens-Ellison (HNInt) 1st Y7-8 Boys, C. McKay (HNInt) 2nd Y7-8 Boys, M. Way (HNInt) 2nd Y7-8 Girls.
