But hey, what's an hour in a year anyway?
However, I may be wrong in assuming there is no countdown, as such an occasion would only take, say, 10 seconds ... so maybe they'll slot it in like they do the Lotto draw every Saturday ... although I'd wager a tenner more people would be watching the six number show rather than the 10-second one.
I have seen more than the occasional New Year arrive, and heard it, and after a time you simply get to the point where it's just another day.
Just another fireworked lower atmosphere ... and just as you were slipping into a dream-enticing unconsciousness.
But each to their own.
The only nod to it being the eve of a new year on Saturday night is from Graham Norton, whose show on TV3 becomes a "NYE Special".
His guest line-up is more varietal than ever and features X-Men actors James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender along with a couple of Irish Olympian rowers as well as an Olympic cyclist.
There is also an actress/singer by the name of Marion Cotillard who is also heavily into environmental issues and Greenpeace pursuits.
I'm sure she has appeared in several good shows and films but I have to be honest here and admit I've never heard of her.
Nor have I the rowers and cyclist but hey, if Graham can conjure some wit and wisdom out of them then all will be well.
I would like to see him invite Sir Les Patterson (the Cultural Attache to the Court of St James) along at some stage.
Now that would be good, very good.
As would Keith Richards from the Rolling Stones but hey, maybe New Year's Eve 2017?
Mr Richards does welcome in the new year however over there on TV1 as he and his veteran colleagues show the populace of Cuba what they had been missing out on in the years the late Fidel Castro would not open the entertainment doors to such western showfolk.
I'm amazed that Mr Richards could actually get through the Cuban customs and arrivals processes without incident but hey, he's starting to settle down now.
And the fine thing about this heralding of the new year is that the Rolling Stones did it for nothing.
Probably just a dozen cigars and a case of rum.
The first night of the new year features another spot of royalty ('tis the season of Windsors it seems) as the Royal Variety Performance 2016 is staged on TV1 on Sunday at 8.05pm.
It is hosted by comedic actor David Walliams who is most certainly going to purposely put his foot in it at some stage of proceedings - given the royal guests are Prince Charles and his missus the Duchess of Cornwall.
Couple of good acts emerge in this two-and-a-bit hour outing in the form of a couple of Mission Concert lads by the names of Barry Gibb and Sting.
Could indeed be a melodic way to start the year.
● Royal Variety Performance 2016, TV1 at 8.05pm Sunday: It will be 2017 when this airs ... so it's from last year already. How time flies huh?
ON THE BOX
● The Bucket List, TV1 at 9.15pm Saturday: I had never encountered the term "the bucket list" before this film came out back in 2007.
I had come across the term of "kick the bucket" which means to cash in one's chips or shuffle off this mortal coil, but didn't take aboard the idea of things you needed or wanted to do before carrying out the bootwork upon the bucket.
So of course it makes for a fine scenario for a story ... a story about two terminally ill men who slip out of their ward in hospital and go on a road trip to do the things they want to do ... before kicking the bucket. Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman star.
● The Rolling Stones: Live in Cuba, TV1 at 11.05pm Saturday: A concert in Cuba.
Wouldn't have happened a decade ago but things have changed in the land of cigars and where superb classic American cars are still being used as taxis.
Maybe this was on the Stones' bucket list given they've played pretty well everywhere else ... barring North Korea of course.
This drew a huge crowd of people who had longed to see this remarkable, some may say legendary, band.
I saw them at Western Springs in 1973 and I've still got the black and white poster of Mick Jagger in his silly jumpsuit tucked away somewhere.
Memories.
If only I could remember more about it. I've no idea why some parts of that whole expedition north ended up hazy and fragmented ... mmm.
