Around a million tyres have been illegally buried and disposed of at a Huntly property, and the man at the centre of the saga is nowhere to be found.
Ross Britten Limited was before the Hamilton District Court this week, and was convicted and fined over $70,000.
A council investigation found that the company director, Ross Britten, was paid to pick up old tyres from outlets around Auckland.
He then used his own earthmoving equipment to bury the tyres at his Waikato property.
Council investigation manager Patrick Lynch says when the tyres are disposed in this matter, they can discharge harmful contaminants, and also become a fire hazard.
The company director, Ross Britten, is believed to be living in Australia to avoid the case.
