SHOT OF THE DAY: Hideki Matsuyama hit an 8-iron from 168 yards to 2 feet on the 18th hole as he and Adam Scott earned a halve against Bill Haas and Webb Simpson.

STAR OF THE DAY: Sammy the Squirrel. Assistant captain Davis Love III found the baby squirrel on the second hole and carried him around the rest of the day. Steve Stricker's wife, Nicki, named him.

SAVE OF THE DAY: Steve Stricker got up-and-down for par from a plugged lie in the bunker on No. 18 that gave the Americans a 1-up win and the lead.

BIRTHDAY BOY: U.S. captain Fred Couples turned 54 on Thursday. International captain Nick Price brought him cupcakes on the first tee.

PARTNERS: Tiger Woods had his 19th partner in the Presidents Cup and Ryder Cup. He and Matt Kuchar won, 5 and 4, the shortest match of the day.

BEATEN: Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley, who were 3-0 as partners at the Ryder Cup, lost to Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel.
