Jemaine Clement has landed a multi-episode role in Marvel's latest TV venture

Flight of the Conchords star Jemaine Clement is following in pal Taika Waititi's footsteps and joining the Marvel universe.

The comic actor has been announced to join the cast of Marvel's upcoming TV show Legion in a multi-episode role.

Series director Noah Hawley announced the news on Instagram, posting a photo of Clement with the caption: "Expect the unexpected".

The show, set in the X-Men universe, follows a mutant named David Haller, aka Legion, who's the son of the famed Professor X and is believed to be one of the most powerful mutants ever with split personalities who each have their own powers.

Believing he's mentally ill, rather than gifted, Haller starts out at a psychiatric institution.

There's no word yet whether Clement will be a patient or doctor there, a fellow hero or even a villain, but it has been confirmed he'll be in multiple episodes, Deadline reports.

Clement's pal and What We Do In the Shadows co-star and co-director Taika Waititi is also a part of the Marvel universe, currently directing Thor: Ragnarok in Australia.

Clement is also lending his voice to Disney's first film featuring a Pacific princess, Moana, in which he plays Tamatoa, a self-absorbed monster crab.

Legion debuts on FX early next year.
