Nick Cave has released a moody black and white video clip as the first glimpse into his forthcoming album, Skeleton Tree.

The album, Cave's 16th release with his Bad Seeds bandmates, will be preceded by a global premiere of the film One More Time With Feeling which will feature the album.

In the short trailer for the film, Cave speaks about a catastrophic event which can make a person change while dramatic, dark music plays in the background.

While Cave doesn't mention his own situation specifically, it's widely believed that the death of the musician's 15-year-old son Arthur inspired the Skeleton Tree.

Arthur died last July after falling from a cliff in Brighton, England where Cave and his family live.

"Most of us don't want to change, really. I mean why should we? What we do want is sort of modifications on the original model. We keep on being ourselves but just hopefully better versions of ourselves," Cave says in the clip.

"But what happens when an event occurs that is so catastrophic that you just change? You change from the known person to an unknown person. So that when you look at yourself in the mirror do you recognise the person that you were? But the person inside the skin is a different person?"

The 3D feature film One More Time With Feeling, directed by Andrew Dominik (Chopper, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, Killing Them Softly) will open on September 8, the day before the album will be released.
