The New Zealand International Film Festival has announced five of the music-themed movies in the programme for the July event.

Among them are Miss Sharon Jones!, a documentary on the New York soul singer as she underwent a year-long battle with cancer before returning to the stage.

Eat That Question: Frank Zappa in His Own Words assembles live and interview footage of the eclectic rock guitarist and composer to tell the story of Zappa's non-conformist musical career.

Elsewhere, Argentina has a showcase for contemporary performers of traditional Argentinian music and dance; Music of Strangers follows cellist Yo-Yo Ma, travelling the Silk Road with fellow virtuoso players on a musical exploration.

It also showcases Wide Open Sky, a doco about how a teacher gathers kids from New South Wales' outback to perform in the annual Moorambilla Voices choir.
