Music Month flashback: Sierra Leone by Coconut Rough

It’s NZ Music Month and the Herald has partnered with NZ On Screen to bring you a music video of a classic New Zealand song every day of the month. Today’s pick is an extreme ear-worm and could lead you to pronounce the name of an African nation incorrectly.

Today's Music Month flashback for NZ Music Month is the synth-pop song Sierra Leone, which was a runaway hit for Coconut Rough in 1983.

The music video, very slick for the time, was one of the first New Zealand videos to use special effects.

It could be considered a little over-the-top, but then so were the song's lyrics, and somehow it all worked a charm making this one an enduring Kiwi favourite.
