Watch Sugar, the new video from Ahoribuzz - the side project of Cairo Knife Fight's Aaron Tokona. The single, featuring guest vocals from Hollie Smith, is released on May 24.
Here, video director Ella Rose shares her thoughts on the video:
I got a call one late Thursday night from Aaron asking if I could direct a film of them performing their new single Sugar at Roundhead Studios on Sunday. I got a copy of the song, dreamed deep on it for a few days and came in three days later to film it!
The song has such a beautiful dark undercurrent. It sounds like love and sex and death, so I tried to bring that into the film with the symbolic elements, like the dark 'raven microphones', the beautiful Mexican death paintings on their faces (done by artist
Erika Pearce), the cage, the smaller skulls (also painted by Erika), the white rather menacing fertility bunnies in the flash edits, the very stark colours, plush red and deep black and bleached out light.
Then in the edit, I wanted a strong sense of pacing, and an ensemble feel for the performers as well as using effects to emphasise the three stages of the song as it builds to a huge orgasmic finish!
Aaron, Hollie and Laughton gave amazing performances, are all stunningly photogenic, and emotionally so present as artists that it was an utter pleasure to work with them.
