Just as his old band rides a revival wave with the release of a live album and concert film, Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant has announced plans for solo shows in New Zealand.

Plant and band the Sensational Shifters will play at Wellington's TSB Bank Arena on Tuesday, April 9 and Auckland's Vector Arena on Thursday, April 11.

The voice of the classic hard rock outfit has been something of a musical tourist - taking in country, 1950s rock 'n' roll and world music - since his band broke up in 1980 and his shows will reflect that eclecticism.

He says his latest outfit is "inspired by the roots music of Mississippi, Appalachia, Gambia, Bristol and the foothills of Wolverhampton and drawing on influences collected in a lifetime of meander and journeying".

The six-piece band features musicians who can turn their hand to one-stringed African violin, African banjo, talking drum as well as conventional bass drums guitar and keyboards.

Tickets go on sale next Monday.
