The Hobbit's Bilbo Baggins is a much more "pompous" Hobbit than Frodo Baggins, says actor Marin Freeman.

The Lord of the Rings prequel focuses on the journey of Bilbo - distant cousin to Frodo, a key character in the Rings films - and Freeman, who plays him, says there are a number of very distinct differences between the pair.

He said: "He is intrinsically more correct than Frodo, more pompous. Frodo is more open, Bilbo has to be broken like a clam. Much of the comedy comes from his correctness in facing danger for the first time."

Freeman, 41, admits he still can't believe he's such an integral part of such a large franchise.

He added to Empire magazine: "There's still a part of me that still doesn't quite believe it's going to come out. Not many things you do in your life take on mythical proportions.

Because of [original novel writer] Tolkien, and because of [director] Peter [Jackson] it's the most anticipated film I'm sure I'll ever do."

The first instalment in the three-part series, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, is in cinemas this December.
