Ryan Gosling is set to take on the lead role in a movie adaptation of EL James' hit erotic book 50 Shades of Grey, according to reports.

James' husband Niall Leonard told Now Magazine that Gosling - often cited as one of the world's sexiest men - was set to play Christian Grey, "last he heard".

Other actors rumoured for the role include Johnny Depp and Robert Pattinson.

But even a spokesperson from the Twilight website Twifans.com agreed Gosling, 31, would make a perfect Grey, telling MTV.com: "Ryan Gosling, Ryan Gosling, and Ryan Gosling. Imagine him in jeans hung low on the hip."

E! reported Gosling's reps haven't commented on the reports.

Leonard also told Now that the character of Grey, a wealthy dominating businessman, wasn't based on him.

"I'm glad I'm not him because he's actually damaged ... I wouldn't have liked to go through what he went through."

Actresses rumoured for the role of Anastasia Steele, Grey's submissive girlfriend in the best-selling novel, include Emma Watson and Angelina Jolie.
