A man sought by police following a violent assault of an elderly woman in an east Auckland rest home has been arrested.
Rangi Joseph Harris, 45, has been wanted by police investigating the attack on the 75-year-old woman at a Botany rest home on Friday.
A tip-off from the public alerted police to his whereabouts, and he was arrested without incident at a Papatoetoe address shortly before 4pm, police said this afternoon.
He would be charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, police said, and is due to appear in the Manukau District Court on Tuesday.
Police thanked the public and media for their help in locating Harris.
The woman was visiting a family member at the home in Botany when the attack occurred around lunchtime.
"The victim was viciously assaulted. She was punched, kicked and stomped on. She was initially in intensive care," said Detective Sergeant John Love.
"Fortunately, her condition has improved slightly and she is now stable. She has
facial fractures and other injuries, though, and will remain in hospital."
