What's shaping up as the most successful local tour in some time - the triple bill of Tim Finn, Dave Dobbyn and Bic Runga - has announced a third show at Auckland's Civic Theatre. The original shows at the venue on Friday August 26 and Saturday August 27 have already sold out, and a third show will now be on Tuesday September 5.
The trio head off on their national tour this week (see Upcoming on D7 for full dates), opening with a sellout at Rotorua's convention centre on Monday night.
TOURIST DEPARTMENT: With winter (hopefully) fading, here comes the rock and other musical tourists from all over. The latest announcement is that of American guitar outfit Fuel, who play the Powerstation on Friday August 25 with support from Slim, betchadupa and Augustino.
The same venue has American punk popsters MxPx on Saturday August 19, and from Britain comes the very exciting live prospect (by the sound of their cracking two albums anyway) the Asian Dub Foundation on Tuesday September 12.
Tickets are also on sale now for a show by US hip-hop soul outfit Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, who kick off a three-date New Zealand tour at the Mt Smart Supertop on Tuesday September 5 before heading to Wellington's Queens Wharf Events Centre the following night.
For those of more retro but still funky tastes, next month sees a tour by British disco-era survivors Hot Chocolate ,who perform the likes of You Sexy Thing and It Started with a Kiss on a New Zealand tour which starts at the TSB Theatre, New Plymouth, on Sunday September 3.
The band also play at the Aotea Centre the following Friday with their North Island shows in Hastings (Sept 5), Wellington (Sept 10) and Hamilton (Sept 11).
RUMOURS: Among the possibles and probables in coming months are visits by American bands the Dandy Warhols and No Doubt. And all those Kiwi bands with albums coming out - which is just about everyone.
Meanwhile, looking towards next year, it appears the concert crush tragedy at Denmark's Roskilde Festival on June 30, which left nine dead during a Pearl Jam set, means the band won't be headlining the Big Day Out. Australian Rolling Stone reports that the BDO's organisers, Ken West and Vivian Lees, were in the final stages of signing the Seattle group but the Roskilde incident would put too much pressure on the event and the band.
GIG OF THE WEEK: We're picking the bent and bluesy Brits Gomez at the Powerstation on Friday supported by Aussie singer-songwriter Alex Lloyd ( his impressive album Black the Sun has made him a name to drop across the Tasman), and locals Eye TV, who are now cruising the top 10 with single One Day Ahead.
