Conspiracy corner: Actor Randy Quaid and his wife Evi are making a movie about their life on the run from alleged Hollywood assassins.
Backstory: Quaid and his missus fled to Canada last year after they were arrested and briefly jailed on outstanding warrants related to felony vandalism charges in Santa Barbara, California.
The pair were collared by cops in September 2010 after they were found illegally squatting in the guest house of a Santa Barbara home they previously owned.
The Quaids protested that they still owned the property, despite the new owner producing paperwork which proved that he had purchased the house in 2007 from a man who'd bought it from the actor.
Quaid and Evi were walloped with charges of felony residential burglary and entering a non-commercial building without consent, with bail set at US$50,000.
They posted bail, but bolted it to Canada and sought refugee status. They were later granted permission to stay in the country, due to Evi's Canadian citizenship.
Quaid held an impromptu press conference following an immigration hearing last October, and flipped the lid on why he and Evi had been on the run.
The National Lampoon star revealed they fled north to seek protection from "star whackers" they said were murdering Hollywood celebrities.
"[I believe] there to be a malignant tumour of star whackers in Hollywood," he said, "I believe these actors were whacked and I believe many others, such as Britney Spears, Lindsay Lohan and Mel Gibson are being played to get at their money," he continued.
He told reporters, "How many people do you know personally who have died suddenly and mysteriously in the past five years?
"I have personally known eight actors, all of whom I have worked with and was close to - Heath Ledger, Chris Penn and David Carradine among them."
He added, "I am being embezzled by this monstrous ring of accountants, estate planners and lawyers who are mercilessly slandering me and trying to kill my career and, I believe, murder me in order to gain control of my royalties."
"Up until a year ago, Evi and I had never had any run-in with the law, whatsoever. We are not criminals, nor are we fugitives from justice, nor are we crazy," Quaid said. "We are simply artists and filmmakers who are being racketeered on."
I can feel a song coming on...
Quaid earlier this month debuted his self-penned conspiracy theme, aptly-titled Star Whackers, at the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver with his back-up band, The Fugitives.
Check out the catchy tune below, which references TMZ, bumping people off, selling their organs on eBay, and those "sleazy star whackers!"
And now the movie...
The Quaids are also making a docu-drama about their efforts to evade said star whackers, and how they ended up in Canada.
The movie, titled Star Whackers (obviously, duh!), will see Quaid star in no fewer than three roles, and follow him as he's targeted by assassins who "plot his demise and hunt him so to appropriate for themselves his value as a movie star."
The doco will debut at The Rio Theatre in Vancouver on April 22, the Globe and Mail newspaper reports.
Evi told the paper if a statement: "This is a work in progress and highly experimental with nudity, adult language and content throughout," she said.
Pray to the heavens that we don't actually see this pair in the nuddie. Awkward.
"For the first time I would like an audience reaction to my art as a work in progress, so I may understand its content through other eyes," she added.
Boasts the theatre's website of the screening: "Outlaws on the run? Or victims in danger from a bizarre shadowy conspiracy called the Star Whackers? You be the judge. ALL your questions will be answered!"
Move over Joaquin Phoenix's I'm Still Here, sounds like the Quaids are set to trump that celluloid hiccup with their own delicious serving of heightened reality. Assuming this is one big Andy Kaufman-like gag.
Or is it...?
