It's a deadly stretch of highway that has claimed 16 lives in one decade, and from today the public will have a chance to have a say on how it can be made safer.
State Highway 33 between Paengaroa and the outskirts of Rotorua has been the scene of regular crashes causing death, injury and road closures.
As recently as Thursday a truck crashed into a fence just south of Paengaroa, blocking the road and sparking a fire in dry grass.
Three weeks earlier, the road was closed and a driver was injured when a logging truck rolled near Paengaroa in the pre-dawn gloom.
Today, and on Thursday, the NZ Transport Agency will hold open days giving the public a chance to offer input into proposed safety improvements aimed at slashing the accident rate.
