The wet weather would continue across the weekend with a moderate risk of thunderstorms, he said.
"It is looking like a pretty wet weekend for Tauranga. Saturday the rain will be on and off for much of the day and will start easing Sunday afternoon. The thing with convective rainfall is that it is very hit and miss, it might hit one suburb but not another."
Temperatures would reach a high of 24C today and tomorrow, with a low of 19C on both days. On Monday and Tuesday the temperature was expected to drop to a high of 23C and a low of 16C overnight.
Despite the wet band of wet weather, fire permits were still suspended in the Western Bay of Plenty.
Pumicelands Rural Fire Authority zone manager Alan Pearce said there was still significant concern.
"Little rain has fallen for nearly a month and what we have had is insignificant. Local weather station readings confirm drought index figures and the expected rain over the weekend will not alleviate the fire danger sufficiently to allow resumption in burning," he said.
"The authority is considering daily aerial inspections of the zone to detect fire and deal with it when located."
In light of the forecast for more bad weather, the New Zealand Transport Agency urged all road users to take extra care and check the latest conditions.
Transport agency journey manager Liam Ryan said the rain may cause some flooding or slips and they motorists should take extra care.
"All people who are using the roads should reduce their speed and increase their following distances.
"As conditions can change rapidly, check the latest weather and road updates before you head out," Mr Ryan said.
