At least three current councillors are looking to fill the void left by Mayor Ross Paterson's departure.

Deputy mayor Gwenda Merriman has decided to go for the top job.

Councillor Don Thwaites said the time was right to seek the mayoralty. Councillor Garry Webber would also go for the role.

Councillor Mike Williams said Mr Paterson's decision to stand down gave him food for thought.

Councillor Kevin Marsh would not been standing for the mayoralty but would run for council again.

Councillors John Scrimgeour and Karyl Gunn-Thomas would not be putting their names forward for the top job.

Councillors Margaret Murray-Benge, Ross Goudie, Sue Matthews and Peter Mackay did not reply to the Bay of Plenty Times' requests for comment by the time the newspaper went to print.
