A Bay man charged with assault after an alleged stabbing incident in Dunkirk Street, Gate Pa on Saturday night will appear in Tauranga District Court tomorrow.

Senior Sergeant Chris Summerville said a 23-year-old local man, who suffered stab wounds to his body, was taken to Tauranga Hospital in a critical condition by his associates.

The patient's condition was now reported as being stable, he said.

Mr Summerville said police enquiries were ongoing and any witnesses were urged to call Tauranga police on 577 4300.

Alternatively they could phone the Crimestopper line anonymously on 0800 555 111.
