A make-shift car yard on Papamoa Beach Rd could be short-lived with Tauranga City Council considering extending a bylaw which bans the sale of vehicles along the beachfront stretch.
When the Bay of Plenty Times Weekend visited the site, just east of the intersection with Parton Rd this week, nine cars - ranging in price from $1600 to $19,500 - were for sale, with one sale and purchase under way at the time.
Tauranga City (TCC) councillor Leanne Brown said the issue had arisen on the Papamoa Link Facebook page where members of the closed group had commented that the cars looked unappealing and created a traffic hazard as people slowed to look at them or pull in suddenly.
Others thought it was great there was somewhere locals could buy and sell cars free of charge.
Cr Brown said an extension of the bylaw - which bans the sale of cars on Papamoa Beach Rd between Girven Rd and Parton Rd - was being considered. A roundabout at the busy intersection, due to be built by the end of 2016, was likely to increase concerns about the safety and suitability of the site, she said.
