More people facing Bay of Plenty courts are being named and shamed as name suppression rates drop.
Figures released by the Ministry of Justice showed a marked decrease of final name suppression grants ruled by the Whakatane District Court from 41 in 2007/08 to just 8 in 2013/14.
The District Court of Tauranga, however, remained level from 2007/08 to 2013/14 with 11 final name suppressions. The number of interim name suppression orders also remained similar with 76 granted in 2013/14.
In 2013/14, the High Court of Tauranga did not grant any interim name suppression orders and handed down less than four final name suppression orders.
Final name suppression means a person can never be named, while interim name suppression is temporary and the judge can lift the order.
