The shaved heads of 23 young men are visible reminders of the money they raised for a friend with cancer.
The Aquinas College First XV rugby boys shaved their locks in support of a young rugby player from Te Wharekura o Mauao who was diagnosed with bone cancer earlier this year.
Captain Reed Wilson, 17, said the team had formed a tight bond with the rugby boys at the wharekura and when they heard of the young man's battle, decided to chip in and help.
The boys organised a shave-off at the school, finding hairdressers to volunteer on the day, and people were asked to pay a donation to watch the big event.
Reed said the team was close with the wharekura boys.
"Some of the boys were pretty moved when they heard his story.
"We found out about a month ago, some of the team had played him last year. A few of our boys were in the kura's younger teams last year so we're keeping the bond going between the schools."
The team talked about what they could do to help and decided to do a mass head shave, Reed said.
The team assembled in the Aquinas College foyer and had their heads shaved.
"We had it done pretty much in front of the whole school. There were heaps of boys with really long hair, like Justin Bieber long, and a few whose hair was their pride and joy."
On Tuesday, Reed and two other team mates visited the wharekura to hand over about $1800 for the boy with cancer and his family.
Reed said he and the rest of the team hoped the money would help the family through a tough time in their lives.
"It makes us feel pretty good about ourselves, we've built a bit of a culture in the team now. When we're walking around the school, it's obvious who we are because of our shaved heads and makes us feel even more like a team."
