A car has crashed over a bank leaving a 20ft rescue boat in the middle of the road near Pukehina.

Emergency services were called to the crash on State Highway 2 near the Pukehina turn-off about 10am.

Fire Service Northern Communications shift manager Peter Stevenson said the car had gone over the bank and the boat had come off the trailer.

"The boat's in the middle of the highway and they needing a bit of a tow."

Police Inspector Willy Taylor said the 20ft rescue boat was blocking the road in one direction.

The sole occupant of the car was not injured, he said.

"We had some repairs done to the boat. We put in a new engine. We had to go back to the shop because there was something wrong.

"So we took it out of the water to go get it repaired and I don't know what happened.
