Emergency services were called to a runaway car that was dangling over a six foot drop in Parkvale this morning.

The unoccupied car rolled off the road and over the bank on Lloyd St about 9.15am.

Tauranga police Senior Sergeant Cam Anderson said the car appeared to have been parked before it rolled over the bank.

"Either the hand brake has failed or it was never put on but it was a parked car at some stage.''

He said the car rolled a short distance before it went over the bank and was left "teetering over the edge of the bank'', which was about six foot high.

A tow truck was used to remove the car. Only minimal damage was caused to the vehicle.

"It couldn't have gathered much momentum because it didn't roll and appeared to have just nosed off the bank," Mr Anderson said.
