Tauranga City Council has been challenged about how it disposes of its expired batteries by a group of primary school children.
A delegation of children from Matua Primary School addressed councillors yesterday to encourage the council to recycle waste batteries.
The children have taken to heart a lesson they recently learned about disposing of batteries in a responsible way and have encouraged their families and friends to take their expired batteries to a council transfer station rather than throwing them out in the rubbish.
The school children have collected more than a wheelie bin and a half of expired batteries since they began their project.
Batteries taken to the transfer station were sent overseas and almost completely recycled, the children said.
