Traffic had to be completely stopped while ambulance staff assisted the motorcyclist, police said.
As a result, there is a "significant backlog" of traffic which will take some time to clear.
Diversions have been put in place but motorists are asked to be patient.

A car and a motorbike have collided on State Highway 2.
Emergency services were called to the accident, which happened at the intersection of Apata Station Rd and SH2 in Apata, just before 8am today.
Motorists travelling between Tauranga and Katikati can expect significant delays.
Tauranga Sergeant Wayne Hunter said the motorcyclist had a broken leg and remained lying in the middle of the highway.
The motorcyclist has been checked by St John.
Mr Hunter said the driver of the car did not appear to be injured.
Diversions are in place.
Mr Hunter said traffic would face delays.
