Members of the Bay of Plenty's CanTeen organisation will get free surfing lessons from top Mount Maunganui surfer Laura Rishworth next week.
Laura was contacted by fellow surfer and CanTeen ambassador Paige Hareb, who asked her if she would consider teaching CanTeen members for free for a day.
Laura says she was
eager to take part and can't wait.
"I haven't done any teaching for charity, I'm looking forward to it," she says. "I'm stoked to have the opportunity to give back to the community."
As well as being one of New Zealand's top women surfers, Laura is a qualified surfing instructor.
She says although she does not know any teens who have been affected by cancer, she has several friends whose parents have had the disease.
After the lesson Laura is looking to the rest of the year's national events to build up to two big events in Europe in June.
CanTeen members liaison co-ordinator Rachel Palmer came up with the idea to have a surf day for CanTeen members.
'Something like paying for surfing lessons is a huge cost... having her (Laura) donate her time to us is a fantastic opportunity," Rachel says.
The surfing lessons will be held at Papamoa Beach from 11am on Tuesday.
