June was drier and sunnier than normal in the Western Bay of Plenty and throughout most of the country, the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) says.
There was just 89.6mm of rain recorded in Tauranga last month - well below the average amount for June of 127mm, and considerably drier than the month of May when widespread flooding occurred.
Temperatures were on par with normal, recording an average maximum of 15C - exactly what is expected for this time of year.
The average lowest temperature for Tauranga was 6.8C, only slightly higher than the normal average lowest temperature of 6.1C.
But, despite the drier and sunnier conditions, winter definitely arrived in the Bay last month with the lowest temperature dipping to a chilly 1.2C.
The warmest recorded temperature in Tauranga was 16.7C.
Nationally, rainfall was a quarter of normal or less in Marlborough, Canterbury and parts of Otago, where some sites had their driest June since the mid-1980s and many locations recorded totals ranging from 5mm to 15mm.
It was less than half normal in Kapiti, Horowhenua and Wellington, but above average in Hawke's Bay and Southland, NIWA said in its June climate summary.
Sunshine hours were well above average in much of Northland, Auckland, Waikato,Taranaki, Buller, Westland, inland South Canterbury, and Otago, but well below average in West Otago.
Temperatures were near average throughout much of the North Island and the north of the South Island, and below average in Canterbury, Southland and Otago.
Takaka in Golden Bay had 183 sunshine hours, its highest ever for June. Dunedin also set a record with 141 hours.
Auckland received 115mm of rain and 141 sunshine hours, Wellington had 49mm of rain and 97 sunshine hours, Christchurch had 12mm of rain and 109 sunshine hours, while Dunedin had 49mm of rain.
Record low June air temperatures were recorded at Whakatu, near Hastings, with -4.9C; Appleby, near Nelson, with -5.5C; and Culverden in North Canterbury, with -8.2C. Air temperatures fell to -6.1C at Christchurch airport, the lowest June temperature in 30 years.
