A baby polar bear which was taken from the China on Ice display in the Auckland Domain has been returned anonymously to police.

Police say that just before 1.00am this morning, the baby polar bear was left outside the Orewa Police station.

Police are unsure of where his journey took him, but the polar bear was returned with an anonymous note saying the person had taken it and was now returning it.

Police say they are now liaising with The Asia New Zealand Foundation to have the bear reunited with his mother.
