Police say an 11-year-old reached speeds of up to 120 km/h after fleeing a police patrol overnight in Papakura.

A member of the public reported seeing a Mitsubushi Galant with what appeared to be a child at the wheel driving erratically.

At about midnight tonight a police patrol in Papakura attempted to stop the car.

The driver failed to stop and fled police at speeds between 100 and 120 km/h for about two minutes before stopping the car and the running off on foot.

A passenger from the car was captured by police and confirmed that the driver was an 11-year-old boy who had escaped from CYPFS custody.

Police are making enquiries to find the boy and establish the ownership of the car.
