A new book by two Auckland doctors outlines vital tools in preventing and dealing with cancer. Kylie Munro reports
Two doctors have answered the question every cancer patient asks - what would you do if it were you?
In a self-published book, husband and wife doctor duo Monica and Gerry Lewis break down the terror of cancer. In Cancer: A Threat To Your Life? Or A Chance To take Control of Your Future? they explain conventional and alternative cancer treatments and give their opinion on their validity.
"Because of the seriousness of cancer, patients tend to clutch at straws,'' says Gerry. "It can be difficult to know which straw has something attached at the end of it. We're just trying to make a bit of sense of all the information.''
The 120-page book, which comes with a talking book on CD, contains a simple definition of the disease, tips to strengthen the body and make it an inhospitable host to cancer, and a chapter on prevention.
The treatments explained range from chemotherapy, radiation and surgery to acupuncture, cumin seeds and wheat grass.
The book, which has sold 5000 copies and is being re-printed, is based on the couple's combined 80 years of medical experience.
Monica is an holistic general practitioner who incorporates mind and body medicine, counselling and nutritional medicine to help patients, while Gerry is a trained general physician and cardiologist who works at the Centre for Advanced Medicine.
Monica says the aim of the book is to give cancer patients hope and more control over their treatment.
"Most people, when they have cancer, everything is done to them. This puts people back in the driving seat.''
The book/CD set costs $30, email bookorders@kellett.co.nz.
