An elderly man who died after crashing his car into a tree in Auckland two days ago has been identified as Robert Nikora, 74, of Papatoetoe.

Mr Nikora was driving through heavy rain when he crashed at the intersection of Tuakau and Buckland Roads near Pukekohe, about midday on Thursday.

He died in hospital yesterday.

Police are still looking for information on the crash.

"We are interested to hear from anyone who can tell us if there were any other vehicles involved in the crash or on the road at the time, as well as any information about where Mr Nikora was heading at the time of the crash," Constable Amy Weston said.

Anyone with information should call the Counties Manukau serious crash unit on 09 261 1302. Alternatively, information can be provided anonymously through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
