City coach Kelvin Francis was positive in his appraisal of the team's performance.
"I'm certainly happy with three [competition] points, we needed it. We now only sit a few points off the top four, which is good.
"I'm definitely happy we scored some goals.
"The boys played from good triangles and moved the ball around well in some pretty testing conditions.
"Everybody did their job on the park. Macca [Bryan Mackie] ran the team on the day, and I was just another player in the team. It worked well."
The effects on morale were clearly apparent following the victory as well.
"The boys are rapt. Marist are not the strongest opposition, but they have some sharp midfielders, and they tried their best to test us. But we were too well organised."
The City Reserves also managed to turn around a string of poor results to finally grab themselves their first competition win this weekend over the Marist Banshees, bagging a 3-2 victory and lifting themselves off the foot of the table.
While the scoreline may not have reflected a massive victory, the rewards for the Reserves would have far outweighed the slim margin at the final whistle.
The Reserves usual determined attitude had not disappeared, but the message about on-field discipline looked to have been clearly received, with their focus squarely placed on gaining a lead and holding on to it for the full 90 minutes.
This win was crucial to the Reserves campaign, as they prepare for their first round knockout fixture in the Federation Cup this weekend.
The big derby match on Wembley's main pitch fulfilled its promise of being an exciting fixture for spectators on the sidelines. While the football on offer was lively and was often open, it was Athletic who really took to the field and wanted the win more than the City Renovators, and that desire ultimately translated to goals with the reds finishing up with an 8-1 victory at the final whistle.
An unfortunate own goal started proceedings off, putting the Renovators on the back foot early in the piece, but the goals for Athletic really showed the diversity of players they have within the squad, with seven different scorers each contributing.
Scott Burney, Kelvin Hove, Tim Hayes, Josh Parker, Richard Saunders, Zeb Small and even central defender Chris Burney all managed to find the back of the net in what was a promising display for Athletic's season.
Tex von Kwiatowski, the City Renovators coach, while disappointed with the loss, was full of praise for their opposition.
"They played very well.
"They moved the ball well and played the match in good spirit. It was not a niggly match. My team were just not ready for the match."
Athletic now move to third placing in the Western Premiership, pushing the Renovators down one place to fourth.
