Sweet tunes, local artists and the smell of fresh produce will be the vibe of the new Whanganui bar in Wilson St.

The Lucky establishment, previously a pop-up joint down by the river, has moved into the old Oggies cafe for a permanent reopening - just in time for the Open Studios.

Owners Georgie Ormond and Matt Edmonds said they are waiting for a liquor licence from the council but they are aiming for a "low-key" opening next Friday, March 24.

By Wednesday, March 29, the couple plan to have the place in full restaurant and bar mode, opening from 4pm till late, every Wednesday to Sunday evening.

Ms Ormond said the new Lucky is an expansion from the previous pop-up bar they ran last summer.

"We have a proper chef, Jerram, who will be running a full restaurant, as well as lots of local artists. We are looking for comedians, live bands, DJs and any different acts with cool vibes," she said.

Ms Ormond, originally from Hawke's Bay, previously worked for the International Comedy Festival in New Zealand and said she saw potential for Whanganui to thrive on great acts.
"We are hoping to snag some of the talent touring Wellington ... there are quite a few out there and it would be great to see them come to Whanganui."

There are already a few artists lined up including Ladi6 who is booked in for May and the Two Cartoons band in April.

"We are also tinkering with the idea of having a harvest swap operation, there is a massive amount of orchards around the area that we would love to take advantage of," she said.
"We want this bar to fill the gap in Whanganui."
