The Lotus Women's Club of Whanganui presented a "sparkly" Diwali celebration on Saturday night.
Organiser Geeta Singh said the expected crowd of 180 grew to 200 at the Carlton School Hall but there was enough food for everyone. "There were a number of musical and dance performances, and everyone seemed to really enjoy it."
Diwali, also known as the Festival of Lights, is one of the most popular Hindu festivals and is celebrated around the world.
The Lotus Club is celebrating early - Diwali is on the 15th day of Kartika in the Hindu calendar, which will be October 30 in New Zealand.
The long weekend provided a good chance for people to attend, and Mrs Singh said celebrations can last for up to five days.
